The Maddington Kenwick Sustainable Communities Partnership today received a boost of $2.3million towards underground power, street lighting, streetscape enhancement and traffic calming in Kenwick Village centre.
Planning Minister John Day said the funding was the State Government’s 2009-10 contribution to the project which began in 2003.
“The City of Gosnells has made considerable progress in the past six years of this partnership project to develop and implement strategies for the sustainable regeneration of Maddington and Kenwick communities,” Mr Day said.
“To do this, it developed alliances with government agencies, non government organisations, businesses and local residents and there is substantial evidence that this has been a project well worth our support.”
The new round of funding announced today will fund the planning, design, installation and commissioning of an underground electricity supply distribution system and the construction of footpaths and pathways, in accordance with the project plan.
Benefits include pedestrian and cyclist safety, with lower traffic speeds, better lighting and improved amenity for all users of the village centre.
The village centre will attract investment and new businesses to establish in the area, as it develops into a more attractive place to shop.
City of Gosnells mayor Olwen Searle said the Government funding would help create a safer, better place to live and work for residents and business people in the Kenwick Village area.
“There has been major community input through the Kenwick by Design project and the ongoing support of the State Government is essential to helping realise the vision shared by the local community and the City of Gosnells for the area,” Mayor Searle said.
“The regeneration of older suburbs has been a spectacular success in other parts of the city and I am sure we can achieve similar results here.”
The underground power and street lighting project is scheduled to be completed by September 2010. Construction of pathways/footpaths, enhancement of streetscape and installation of traffic calming devices will follow and should be finished by March 2011.
