Multicultural food fair bigger and better in 2009

as posted here

This year’s City of Gosnells Multicultural Food Fair will be even bigger and better with fireworks for the family and a live cooking demonstration by Master Chef contestant Josh Catalano.
One of the City’s major annual events, the fair offers taste sensations from around the world with a huge range of international cuisine – including Asian, Turkish, Italian, Maori, Russian, South African, Irish and Indian dishes, as well as Indigenous, European and vegetarian foods.
City of Gosnells Mayor Olwen Searle said the fair showcased the City’s cultural diversity and gave people the chance to come together in a family-friendly environment.
“With a community of more than 80 nationalities, the multicultural food fair is a great way to bring people together,” Mayor Searle said.
“This is a real family event and has become a calendar highlight among many residents and cultural groups.”
At the fair there will also be arts and crafts displays, roving entertainers, dancing, free children’s activities and multicultural stage performances throughout the night – culminating in a spectacular fireworks show.
On the night, vote for your favourite stall and go into the draw for a chance to win a great prize.
The fair runs from 6 to 10pm on Friday 20 November at the Langford Sports Centre on Wingrove Road, Langford and is supported by the City of Gosnells and LotteryWest.

World Toilet Day

why is
world toilet day necessary?

Because 2.5 billion people worldwide are without access to proper sanitation, which risks their health, strips their dignity, and kills 1.8 million people, mostly children, a year.

Because even the world's wealthiest people still have toilet problems - from unhygienic public toilets to sewage disposal that destroys our waterways.

Coote Industrial in $40m raising

TIGHTLY held Perth specialist engineering company Coote Industrial has raised $40 million and embarked on a debt reduction and working capital expansion program.
The Maddington-based company - which last financial year posted revenue of $317 million but debt charges sent profit into an uncharacteristic $4.54 million loss - is a quiet achiever in WA business circles.

Coote Industrial operates in applications covering agriculture, aerospace, construction, defence, maritime, rail, resources and power generation.

It owns successful divisions including Gemco Rail, rail support group Momentum and tank maker Convair and has amalgamated its Coote Energy, Hedemora and Drivetrain subsidiaries into a new arm, Drivetrain Power and Propulsion. It also has the European-based turbocharger business, Turbomeca.

It has divisions and subsidiaries operating from 54 locations spread from Maddington to the US, Sweden, Singapore, the Philippines and New Zealand.

The capital raising announced today comprised a $30 million placement to institutional and sophisticated investors, plus a $10 million share purchase plan offered to existing shareholders.

Both were undertaken at 26c a share, a discount to the current 34c/share price.

Coote managing director Mike Coote said the funds would be used to ``pay down debt, improve liquidity and provide working capital for increasing volumes of forward orders and contracted work''.

``The new capital will also enable Coote Industrial to concentrate on a number of new growth opportunities while completing the two remaining key objectives determined for 2009/10, being settlement of the second tranche of locomotives sold to Greentrains and the divestment of the logistics businesses.''

Coote is selling its South Spur Logistics division because it doesn't fit with the technical-base of the other entities.

The company said while it posted a profit loss in the past year, it retained a strong $300 million-plus revenue base.

Mr Coote said while he envisaged financial constraints to continue into the current financial year, ``plans are in place to to further rectify liquidity''.

WA couple busted with over 32kg illegal drugs

as posted here

STAFF REPORTER
November 18, 2009 - 1:25PM
A Thornlie husband and wife have been caught with more than 32kg of the illegal drug Khat - a plant with effects similar to amphetamines, police say.
WA police spokeswoman Susan Usher said Cannington detectives intercepted three parcels from Australia Post, containing about 7.5kg of Khat, following a tip-off last week.
After the controlled delivery of the parcels to the house of a 40-year-old man and his 37-year-old wife detectives searched the premises where they nabbed a further 25kg of the drug and cash.
Sergeant Lambert said that while growing khat in Australia was legal, removing and using the leaves was not.
He said the plant, which is chewed as a stimulant in many areas of eastern Africa, is common in Perth, particularly in the western suburbs.
The flowering plant contains Cathinone which is listed as a prohibited drug under the Misuse of Drugs Act.
"It grows legally, but cultivating its leaves is illegal," Sgt Lambert.
"We have dealt with quite a few cases of trespass where people have scaled fences or gone onto properties to try to grab the plant's leaves."
He said the Thornlie case was unusual because of the large amount involved.
The couple were charged with attempting to possess a prohibited drug with intent to sell or supply, possessing the drug and unlawful possession.
They are due to appear in the Armadale Magistrate court on December 3.

A family fight ended in a police siege last night after a man began shooting a house and nearby cars from the back yard of his Huntingdale property.
Sergeant Graham Clifford said police rushed to a house on Kelvdedon Way at 6.30pm yesterday, where a 43-year-old man was seen walking in and out of his house, charging a rifle and firing shots.
The man had also shot bullets into a car in front of the house, Sergeant Clifford said. No one was injured from the stray bullets.
Police cordoned off the area and officers approached the man to surrender his weapon.
Sergeant Clifford said the man was eventually arrested after being subdued with a Taser and disarmed.
He said the man had become enraged following a fight with a family member.
Charges are expected to be laid later today.
