Mitchell Marsh faces a dilemma.
A talented footballer who was part of the State under 18s program last year, Marsh also faces a bright future in cricket.
He will soon have to make a decision about which sport he intends to pursue.
Marsh underlined his potential in the summer game with a record-breaking double-century for Fremantle on Saturday that put his team into a dominant position against Gosnells.
Marsh passed Mark McPhee's club record of 202 not out when he hammered 208, including 26 fours and 9 sixes, to help his team to 9-386.
Gosnells lost one wicket in their four over reply and Fremantle are sure to push hard for an outright victory that would keep alive their slim finals hopes.
Marsh will also bat for the WA second XI in the match against Queensland starting at Allan Border Field in Brisbane tomorrow.
But one player who will not be involved in that game in Wanneroo’s prolific No.3 Gary Dixon, the leading Retravision Shield runscorer this season, who refused the invitation to play because he intends to play baseball next year.
Dixon has scored 819 runs this season and is the favourite to win the Olly Cooley Medal as the champion club cricketer.
But he managed only 11 in Wanneroo’s paltry 99 as Willetton all-rounder Matt Johnston claimed a career-best 6-37 while the competition’s leading wicket-taker Chris Lagana, who had 31 before the round, picked up 4-30.
Warriors all-rounder David Bandy, who suffered a horrific head injury after being struck in the head during the Sheffield Shield match at the MCG before Christmas, made his comeback when Scarborough dismissed South Perth for 266 at Richardson Park.
Bandy was given the all-clear to resume late last week but did not bowl on Saturday. Ty Hopes and Theo Doropoulos each claimed three wickets while Hugh Brown top-scored with 76.
The race for the finals remains intense with seventh-placed Claremont-Nedlands in trouble against Rockingham-Mandurah and University (eighth) in a tight tussle with Perth.
Subiaco-Floreat are hanging on desperately to sixth spot and could strengthen their position after a strong display against Midland-Guildford.
Claremont were dismissed for 201 and Corey Whisson has helped bat Rockingham into favouritism at 2-79.
And after Uni were dismissed for 191, a century stand between Jim Cameron and Mark Penter preceding a collapse of 8-61 as Ross Scali claimed 6-42, Perth reached 1-24 before a thunderstorm stopped play.
Subi reached 0-45 after dismissing last-placed Midland for 211 while top team Melville knocked over third-placed Bayswater-Morley for 209 with veteran Steve Russell claiming 6-58.

Langer spat as finals race comes to the boil

The race for the Retravision Shield finals has started to heat up with just three rounds of qualifying fixtures to go.
Four teams are within 1.25 points of sixth-placed Subiaco-Floreat.
Second innings bonus points - with every run worth 0.01 points and every wicket worth 0.2 - could be crucial as
Claremont-Nedlands, University and Wanneroo try to force their way into the top six.
Melville continue to dominate the competition after a crushing victory over third-placed Willetton sent the losers crashing.
Adam Voges completed a fine double with 3-11 and 74 preparing him for WA's important matches in the next month.
Scarborough also got back into the winner's circle when they put an end to Rockingham-Mandurah's finals hopes.
Justin Coetzee produced his third ton of the season while leg-spinner Ty Hopes claimed 4-25. But most excitement came in Justin Langer's sole over in the middle.
The former Test star had a verbal altercation with veteran Joe Sarsero, thrashed two fours and two sixes and was caught on the boundary in his first league match of the season.
University continued their advance under new captain Josh Mangan by accounting for Subiaco-Floreat in the inaugural Paul Nicholls Shield match.
The former State player captained and was on the committee at both clubs but died last week after a long battle with cancer.
Uni allrounder James Cameron put in a claim for a WA second XI berth with a powerful century in Uni's run chase after Subi were kept to 177 with Patrick Molinari (3-25) and Mangan (3-20) bowling superbly.
Gary Dixon is another player who should have come to the attention of the State selectors after producing his fourth century for Wanneroo this season.
Dixon crossed 800 runs for the season and will challenge Darrin Ramshaw's 20-yearold club season record of 856. His even 100 took Wanneroo to 250 in reply to cellar-dwellers Midland's 159.
Baywater-Morley moved into third place after State captain Marcus North's 87 helped them account for Gosnells.
But the Bears face top two clubs Melville and Scarborough in the next two rounds and will have to work hard to hang on to their place.

Gary Dixon is another player who should have come to the attention of the State selectors after producing his fourth century for Wanneroo this season.
Dixon crossed 800 runs for the season and will challenge Darrin Ramshaw's 20-yearold club season record of 856. His even 100 took Wanneroo to 250 in reply to cellar-dwellers Midland's 159.
Baywater-Morley moved into third place after State captain Marcus North's 87 helped them account for Gosnells.
But the Bears face top two clubs Melville and Scarborough in the next two rounds and will have to work hard to hang on to their place.

Bikies suspected of nightclub bashing begin trial

Three members of the Gypsy Jokers motorcycle gang who allegedly bashed another man outside a Gosnells nightclub in 2007 began their trial in the WA District Court today.
The men - Dean Alan Adams, Peter Floyd Robinson and Gordon Edwin Rodgers - have been accused of intending to cause harm to as well as endangering the life of Petera Heta Haimona outside the Cactus Nightclub in the early hours of May 12, 2007.
State prosecutor James MacTaggart told the court that each of the accused inflicted several injuries on Mr Haimona by a "combination of kicking and punching" along with various objects such as a wheel brace, club and a piece of wood or metal approximately one metre in length.
"It was a brutal attack which occurred in a short amount of time," he said during his opening address.
"They punched, kicked or otherwise hit him with the objects I described with the intention to cause harm.
"His life, health and safety were likely to have been endangered during the attack."
The prosecution also put forward an alternative charge of grievous bodily harm because of Mr Haimona's injuries.
The court was told the attack occurred outside the nightclub in the car park a little before 4am when Mr Haimona - who was known as "Kiwi Pete" to nightclub staff - went to help out a friend who was involved in a scuffle.
He was later chased by the three accused as he moved up a flight of stairs leading to the club.
Mr MacTaggart said Robinson attempted to strike the victim with a club, but Mr Haimona kicked out at him, causing Robinson to fall down the stairs.
The court heard Rodgers and Adams then struck the victim with various objects.
Adams struck Mr Haimona "several times with a wheel brace to the head and upper body" and was also kicked in the head during the attack.
"It forced Mr Haimona to curl up on the ground to try to protect himself," Mr MacTaggart said.
"Mr Haimona was bleeding profusely from the wounds on his head and suffered bruising to his head and upper body."
He also suffered abrasions and swelling to his left ear, a swollen nose and skin abrasions to the back of his torso.
"The injuries were likely to cause permanent damage," Mr MacTaggart told the court before describing Robinson as the "main participant" in the suspected attack.
"(Also) the appearances of the men were consistent with those on the security footage.
"This was an undoubted attack for which there was no lawful excuse."
Rodgers' lawyer, Gary Massey, told the jury that although there was no denying the injuries suffered by the complainant, "what is in dispute however is whether or not Rodgers did it".
"You must try the case on the evidence and not let any feelings of prejudice and sympathy sway your decision," he said.
Jeremy Scudds - who is representing Adams - reminded the jury the "burden of proof" fell on the prosecution.
"Even reliable witnesses can be wrong," he said.
"The consistency in terms of appearance on the footage is not beyond reasonable doubt.
"It is a bogan's pub.
"There are a lot of goatees, beards and long hair at the Cactus Club - which would suggest many people who go there have very similar appearances."
Defence counsel for Robinson, Helen Prince, also raised doubts about the use of identification as evidence in the trial.
"The problem with identification is that honest people can be mistaken," she said.
He said her client had been at that pub the previous lunchtime.
The court was told he would call on witnesses during the trial to confirm that he was asleep at the time of the suspected attack "after a long day of drinking".
"Robinson's DNA was not found on any weapons the State is referring to," Ms Prince told the court.
"Ten days after the attack, police went to his house and he looked the same.
"Surely he would have been expected to change his appearance had he done it."
The trial, which is set down for a week before Judge Roger Macknay, continues.
