A man accused of stealing hundreds of thousands of dollars from an Islamic school in Perth has appeared in court.

Anwar Shah Wasiq Sayed is accused of falsifying federal and state government grant applications to the order of $1 million to secure funds for the Muslim Ladies College in Kenwick.

It is also alleged he stole about $350,000 from the school for his own use.

In the Perth Magistrate's Court, Mr Sayed's lawyer said his client would defend the charges.

He was released on bail and is due to appear in court again later this month.
