In his early teens, Liam Hendriks was told he would not realise his goal of playing professional baseball unless he toughened up mentally and physically.
Now in his third season with the Minnesota Twins, the 19-year-old believes the comment by respected Australian coach Tony Harris was a wake-up call which has contributed to his development.
Hendriks will lead Perth Heat’s pitching assault when they play in the 75th edition of the Claxton Shield final at Baseball Park in Thornlie starting on February 6. Perth ended their regular season with a threegame series sweep over Victoria at home two weeks ago but won’t know their final opponent until tomorrow when Victoria and NSW finish their semifinal series in Melbourne.
Hendriks, the son of former West Perth footballer Geoff Hendriks, has spent the past two years at Rookie-Ball level but after an impressive Claxton Shield campaign will be pushing for a spot on the national team for the World Baseball Classic in Mexico in March. He made his Australian debut in last year’s Olympic qualifying tournament in Taiwan.
But with Australia expected to field a full-strength line-up with some bigleague regulars, competition for playing spots will be tough.
“We didn’t have all our best players in the pre-Olympic tournament but the world’s best players will all be available for the World Baseball Classic and I’m pleased just to be considered among those players this early in my career,” Hendriks said.
He had surgery late last year and eased his way into the Claxton Shield season, finishing with a 3-1 record and earning a run average of 3.05, the best for Perth Heat.
Hendriks started in a relief role and finished as a starter and from here the pressure will increase even more as Perth try to win consecutive titles.
Perth have been without national player Scott Mitchinson, who has not played in Australia this summer after an injury-marred season with the Oakland Athletics in California.
Another of the Heat’s pitchers, Cameron Lamb, has not played all season and Jason Smit has been unavailable for the past month. This leaves the door open for Hendriks.
“He’s got decent velocity with good location with three pitches. He can throw for strike just about all the time,” coach Don Kyle said.

North, Birrell take Joondalup attack to pieces
as posted here

A record partnership involving WA captain Marcus North has ushered Bayswater-Morley into the top six of the Retravision Shield and into the frame to play in the finals series in March.
North’s second century of the season, a dominant 158, helped Bayswater displace Perth in sixth place despite the Demons recording a tight victory over Fremantle.
After coming together at 3-20 in replay to Joondalup’s imposing 9-320, North and Matt Birrell (153) put on 326 for the fourth wicket to help the Bears to 6-413.
The stand was the biggest in WACA history for the fourth wicket, passing the 319 put on by Justin Langer and Kade Harvey for Scarborough against Fremantle in 2000-01.
Baywater’s previous record was the 199 set by Derek Aslett and Glen Hughes against Wanneroo 24 years ago.
Another four runs would have seen North and Birrell create the third highest stand for any wicket in WACA history but they have to be content with the fifth highest.
North’s State team-mate Luke Ronchi saw Perth home in reply to Fremantle’s 237 by remaining 88 not out.
But Perth dropped a spot despite their win and are now just 0.42 points – or 42 runs – out of the top six.
The race for the finals has become more intense with candidates Rockingham-Mandurah, University and Wanneroo improving their chances with solid wins.
Rockingham pushed hard for an outright win over last-placed Midland-Guildford but could not take the final four wickets.
Midland were rolled for 139 in reply to Rocky’s 7-329 and were in trouble at 6-77 in their second innings before hanging on.
Uni saw off a lion-hearted effort from State speedster Ben Edmondson to record a superb fighting win over South Perth.
Uni lost three wickets in a hurry with the game in the balance at tea after South Perth made 230 but captain Josh Mangan (82) and Mark Penter (111) produced a stout century stand to see them home.
And Wanneroo’s 9-449 was far too many for Gosnells who were dismissed for 196 and had to work hard to stave off an outright loss after losing 4-1 in their second innings.
Ryan Duffield and Norwood produced a club record sixth wicket stand of 145 to help Gosnells survive after Graeme Atkinson did the damage during an expensive spell that saw three wickets and 61 runs in a seven-over spell.
Willetton and Subiaco-Floreat retained their placed in the top six after their draw provided them with five points each but both teams are now vulnerable to the challengers pushing from below.
Melville stretched their lead at the top of the ladder after a comprehensive win over Mt Lawley while powerhouse Scarborough lost all 20 wickets in innings of 74 and 176 as they slumped to a thrashing at the hands of fifth-placed Claremont-Nedlands.
Jim Allenby had superb figures of 5-20 and 3-20 as the strife-racked Claremont maintained their strong recent form.
